Recently a customer asked me about linen. She had heard the fabric is coming back in fashion this summer (which it is) and she wanted to know more about it. Linen is a textile made from fiber of the flax plan, Linum Usitatissimum, and it's renowned for its coolness and freshness in hot weather. It's also dirt resistant and has water-repelling qualities.
The history of linen dates back thousands of years. At one time it was used as currently in ancient Egypt. Egyptian mummies we wrapped in linen because it was seen as a symbol of light, purity and a display of wealth. The manufacture of the fabric hasn't changed much over the centuries. Flax plants are hand-picked to preserve integrity and then the fibers from the stalk are meticulously separated. (Cotton machines are sometimes used for this, but it lessens the quality of the linen.)
To ensure your linen garments last years, cold wash on the gentle cycle and hang or lie flat to dry. Don't worry about ironing because the fabric is known for wrinkling and that's part of its attractiveness. So, this summer, invest in a wonderful linen shirt, stay cool, throw away the iron and embrace the new look, with wrinkles!
TIPS AND FACTS ON RENTING TUXEDOS
1. Don't need pants? No problem. Black & Lee (with whom we work) will let you rent partial suits or tuxes. For example, if you already have the perfect pair of trousers, you can just order the shirt and jacket.
2. Pocket squares do not have to be returned with your rental. They're yours to keep.
3. Reserve your tuxedo at least a month in advance.
4. Wearing cufflinks with a shirt helps keep you cooler because your shirt cuffs are more open and allow for better air flow.
5. You must try on your tuxedo or suit a minimum of one week
before your graduation, wedding, or special event to ensure everything
