Black Bean Brownies

Try a healthy twist on an old favourite.

1 can black beans, drained and rinsed
1/2 cup agave syrup
1/2 cup self-raising flour
1/2 cup egg whites (approx. 4 eggs)
2 Tbsp vanilla
1 tsp baking powder
2 Tbsp chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.  Place all ingredients, except chocolate chips, in food processor or blender and mix until smooth.  Add chocolate chips and mix by hand.  Pour batter into 8-inch pan and bake 20 minutes.

For a delicious icing, cream together 6 oz. cream cheese, 1/4 cup agave syrup and 2 Tbsp vanilla extract.  Then melt 2 Tbsp chocolate chips and swirl in the cream cheese mixture.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF FASHION
by Noreen Lynas
Although fashion goes back several centuries, I have decided to start this history in the 1920's, as this was an era of great change and liberation in North America.  It was a time when fashion entered the modern era and women began liberating themselves from constricting designs and wearing more comfortable clothes such as short skirts or trousers.

After the First World War, America enjoyed a prosperous era and women entered the workforce in record numbers.  There was a revolution in human activity and fashion was, naturally, affected.  Technological advancements at this time also impacted fabrics:  rayon, for example, came on the American scene around 1920.  This "artificial silk" was less expensive to produce (it's made of cellulose) and was used for stockings and undergarments.  Other advancements included the incorporation of new fastening technology.  Before the '20's, most garments utilized buttons and lacing, but soon zippers, snaps, hooks and eyes, began to be used.

One of the first women to wear trousers, cut her hair short and throw away her corset, was Coco Chanel, likely the 20th Century's most influential woman in fashion.  Her style continues today in the form of women's trousers, now more commonly known as pants.

The summer and fall fashions for 2011 have been greatly influenced by the 1920's.  For example, hip-length tunic tops were in style back then, worn with knee-length skirts, and today they have returned, although now the style is to wear them with leggings.  Also, dresses in the '20's had a drop waist and fullness at the hemline to allow women the freedom to enjoy the new dance craze called the Charleston.  This year, dresses have some the teh same styles.  So add a dress to your wardrobe this summer and start a new dance craze of your own!

Stay tuned for the History of Fashion starting in the 1930's in our next Newsletter.
